Working with SharePoint picture libraries

We know that in SharePoint we can store Images and Files in two Places.

  1. Picture Library
  2. File Server [ 12 hive Layouts /Images folder]

The concern here is where we should store in above two Places.

  1. Picture Library :
  • the first advantage is storing the picture in picture library is of course metadata information facility about pictures, we can create column in picture library and while uploading we can save the important metadata about the particulare picture which will help in Searching , filtering and ordering,
  • the second most important advantage is the permission handling we can control who will have to access the picture
  • Versioning , approval , thumbles we can leverage the functionality.
  • Check in , check out/ forced Checkout
  • Version History Major/Minor Version
  • User Restore with Recyclebin or Second stage Recycle bin Site Collection Recycle bin[default]
  • File and Doc Library Rights Management Integration Policies
  • Filtering, Grouping, Workflow (out of box), Content Types
  • Site Collection Quotas, Built in Usage Reporting, Storage Manager
  1. File Sharing : Window
  • Windows editing
  • Shadow Copy User Restore
  • Snapshotted versions (not change based versions)(not configured by default
  • File level right management
  • Non Transactional. No Rollback without Shadow Copies
  • ACL based File Security and Effective permissions (AD only)
